In short
What happens if an Apple Developer membership is not renewed?
If an Apple Developer membership is not renewed, the apps stop being available for download on the App Store, no new apps or updates can be submitted, and access to certificates, identifiers and profiles closes. Users who already installed the app keep using it. The membership can be repurchased for up to one year after the expiration date, and only the Account Holder can renew it.
What happens to your apps when the membership expires?
Apple's rule comes in three parts: when the membership expires your apps are no longer available for download on the App Store, you cannot submit new apps or updates, and access to Certificates, Identifiers and Profiles closes. The fourth part is the reassuring one: the app keeps working for users who already downloaded or installed it.
So an expiry is not a deletion, it is an invisibility. And because the effect is silent it is usually noticed late: downloads drop, a customer writes “I can't find your app”, and the panic starts that day.

How long can you come back after expiry?
One year. Apple states you can resubscribe for up to one year after your membership expiration date; renew inside that window and the app listings return. Outside it, what you are left with is the source code — the store page, the reviews and the install history cannot be restored.
The practical consequence: if you have an account whose membership slipped, check the calendar rather than assuming it can wait. The difference between renewing in month eleven and month thirteen is the entire history of a two-year-old app.
Why is the payment declined?
Apple's own rule is explicit: if the payment cannot be processed within four days the order is cancelled. That means you have a limited window to fix it. For payments from Türkiye the blockages are usually on the bank side rather than the technical one.
- International use is switched off on the card — most banks re-enable it in one tap in the mobile app.
- The US dollar amount exceeds the card's per-transaction or daily limit.
- The 3-D Secure prompt goes to a phone number that is no longer on the account.
- The name on the card does not match the Account Holder; on corporate cards this is the most common failure.
- The card was reissued but the expiry date stored with Apple was never updated.
What if the renew button is not there?
First check which identity you signed in with: renewal is visible only to the Account Holder, and admins or developers see no button. Second, check the renewal window; it opens as expiry approaches and simply is not there if you look too early.
Third is a platform difference: for some accounts the renewal flow runs through the Apple Developer app rather than the web. If none of the three apply and time is short, contact Apple — waiting is expensive once the four-day collection window has started.
How do you remove the problem entirely?
Three settings are enough. First, attach the Account Holder role to a company mailbox rather than a person, so the account does not lock when someone leaves. Second, put the renewal date in the calendar with two reminders: thirty days and seven days before. Third, update the card ahead of its expiry date — an expired card is the single most common cause of a failed renewal.
These are not part of a maintenance contract, they are part of staying published. Store accounts are not set-and-forget; they have an annual calendar, and when it is missed the app keeps running for existing users while reaching no new ones.
